What’s in a Name?

That which we call a rose by any other name would smell as sweet.

I’ve decided to change my blog’s name. I’ve had the name “Haecceity” (pronounced “heck-see-it-ee”) since 2006. At the time I purchased it I was just done with my freshman year of college and thought a Latin-derived term from medieval philosophy not only looked cool but I loved the meaning of it.

Don’t get me wrong—I still love the meaning of the word. Haecceity is the aspect of a person, place, or thing that makes it a specific and unique person, place, or thing. Problem is, it makes a terrible blog name. No one can figure out how to pronounce it, let alone spell it, and then I also had to buy a non-standard TLD (.nu!) so that added to it’s URL complications. Honestly, when I started the site, even I didn’t pronounce it right. It wasn’t until later that I learned the actual pronunciation of the word, which is terrible considering I was forced to take two whole years of Latin in high school.

Anyway, I digress. The point is, however cool the name may be to me, it’s not very accessible to everyone else! So I’d like to introduce you to my blog’s new name: Little & Fierce. The inspiration for this name comes from a Shakespearean quote from Midsummer Night’s Dream: “Though she be but little, she is fierce!” It feels appropriate, since I am both petite (for those not in the know, I stand a shocking 5 feet tall) and, well, fierce!

Fierce has interesting connotations. It can mean powerful, aggressive, brave, and if you go back to it’s roots in Latin (Hah! There’s that damn language again) it means “untamed.” I’m a little wild, a little weird, definitely a little aggressive, so I like it. It fits.

Let’s hope it sticks!

(As a reminder, if you are subscribed to this blog via RSS you might want to update it to the new RSS feed URL! If you are subscribed via Feedburner it should update automatically. However, since Google has dropped support of Feedburner, you might want to switch over anyway.)
